When was the last time you had to go looking at a new stove? Do you remember how many different options there were? Not to worry, we’re taking a look at them this week to see what main features exist in stoves and how to find the one that best fits you. Let’s dive in. 

Types



Electric

Let's start off by looking at THE most common type of cooktop you're likely to encounter when looking to purchase a new stovetop, an electric stove. They are the single most popular variety in the United States, and the easiest to find. They're also the easiest to set up, as most kitchens will already have an outlet that's heavy enough to handle the power draw of an electric stove. Due to the popularity they're also fairly inexpensive to pickup which makes them great for someone who is on a budget or is just looking to put their money elsewhere.  They're also typically very easy to clean, no matter whether you get a cooktop with coils or without. 


Since you don't need an 'ignition' as soon as you turn on a burner it will begin to heat. However, because the heat is cumulative rather than immediate, it does take more time than a gas stove to heat up. This also means that it takes longer to cool off by comparison to a gas stove.  Since there isn't an open flame of any sort though, many people prefer an electric stove over a gas one. 


There are some drawbacks to an electric stove though. One is that if your home loses power, you lose your stove as well. The other is that while there are energy efficient stoves, as of right now an electric stove is still going to be a significant chunk of your electric bill. A final, smaller point is that you do have to be careful about what pots and pans you purchase. Make sure to do research ahead of time as some types can scratch, damage or shatter your cooktop if you make the wrong purchase. 


Gas


Next up, let's take a look at gas stovetops.  A gas stovetop has a number of benefits to it, the primary one is how quickly they heat. Due to their instant flames as soon as you turn on a burner you begin to heat the room (and the food you're wanting to cook.) With that visual element, you also have very precise control over the temperature of your burners. Although it's more intuitive than just setting the burner to high, medium or low, you get the upside of being able to see over time how the heat affects your recipes. The speed with which the flame responds also means that you can cool what you're cooking much more quickly by lowering the flame. All of this boils down (ha!) to being less likely to burn your food. 


Another benefit of such quick temperature response is that you can heat up or cool down the pan you're using. So if you've got pets, small children or you're just working in tight spaces, you're less likely to burn yourself thanks to how quickly a gas stove will cool off. This also means that you don't have to worry about a pan getting damaged by the stove OR that a pan is going to damage your stove in some way. 


A gas stove is able to still be used even if your power is out. You'll need to use a match or lighter to get the burner lit, but you'll still be able to cook or boil water if you need to, to heat your home in the event of a winter storm.  Under normal circumstances a small bit of electricity will be used to 'spark' and ignite the burner when you turn it on. 


There are two factors though that you do need to pay attention to when it comes to purchasing a gas stove for your home. If you don't already have a gas stove, you're going to need to have a gas pipeline run. That can be expensive as it's not typically done on construction for new buildings these days. Fortunately the price of having the line run will pay for itself over time when you don't have to worry as much about your electric bill. You also need to make sure that you have some type of ventilation set up. We'll talk about it more down below, but you have two options when it comes to ventilation. An overhead hood and a downdraft extractor. Both are good options, so long as you actually use them. While a gas oven is by and far superior in terms of precise temperature control, it does burn gas, which you don't want to be breathing over an extended period of time. Make sure to always have your fans on while you're using you stove. 


It is possible to have a combination of a gas stove and an electric oven, or vice a versa, although it's not common. You can also choose to have them as separate appliances, setting the stovetop into your counter and the having a single or double oven in your wall.  Both of these are wonderful options if you've got the space for them in your kitchen as they spread out the cooking area in your kitchen and mean you aren't fighting for space when cooking multiple things at once. 


Induction 

If a gas stove isn't fast enough for you,  then you're going to want an induction stove. We'll tell you off the bat that the benefits of these stoves are weighed against their hefty price tag. While the heat from an electric or gas stove is going to transfer across the entirety of the cookstove to some degree, an induction stove doesn't work that way. The stoves are ceramic with different 'zones' built into them. Instead of applying heat to the outside of your pot and the heat transferring to the material inside, the heat is created directly inside your cooking pot. Once you take the pot off the stove, the heat immediately is turned off. The good news here is that the stovetop is never as hot as an electric stove or a gas stove is going to be.  The downside though is that you need to purchase an entirely new set of pots and pans to go along with your new stove. The two work together much like velcro.  A normal pot doesn't have the elements needed for it to work with the stove, and so it won't. The elements within the stove won't 'register' the pan and so it won't turn on. 


You also have to be very careful with an induction stovetop as you can shatter the surface of them if you're not careful in how you put things down. 


Surface

When it comes to the surface of your stovetop, you have two different options, coils or smooth cooktops. 

A coiled cooktop can be either electric or gas. A smooth cooktop is only going to be electric or induction. 

The benefits to going with a coiled cooktop is that they're extremely durable, easy to clean and they will stand up to years of use and abuse. It doesn't matter how hard you scrub your stovetop to get rid of a mess, it's not going to damage the coils.  Your cookware won't either, even if you're dragging out that giant dutch oven that you have. 

A few downsides to keep in mind are that  while they do heat quickly, coils also hold onto that heat for a long time. You will also need to check them periodically (every 4 months or so is pretty good) to make sure that each coil's connection to the power source is still in working condition if you're dealing with an electric stove. If you're dealing with a gas stove you'll want to make sure that the burner is clean and free of debris. 


The other type of cooktop option you have is a smooth cooktop.  People love them for three key reasons. One, they're supremely easy to clean. You don't have to remove anything, unplug anything or get under anything in order to get them shining like new. All you need is the special paste that is designed for the job and you're good to go. Reason number two is that they heat up your pots and pans, without heating your kitchen. If you live in Texas, it makes it that little bit more bearable for cooking during the summer.  Three, you don't need to worry about little hands or paws getting burned because they touched the stove at the wrong time. A fourth one, is how seamlessly they fit into a modern design. They are the latest in cooking technology and we know people love to upgrade to the latest and greatest. 


A few downsides do come with working with a smooth cooktop though. As we said, you do have to be careful about which cookware you use. You're also going to have to be aware of how you move that cookware though. Or any groceries or anything else that you move around in your kitchen. The surface of a smooth cooktop, whether electric or induction is going to be fragile. They can be easily scratched by 'sliding' pots and pans over them. Even worse is how easily they can be shattered by putting something heavy on top of them without paying attetion to how you set it down. 


So, which type of surface do you think you want? 

Burners

Number of burners

You can get your stove in a variety of different number of burners, 2, 4, 5, or 6.  How large you want it to be is going to dictate how many things you can cook on it at once. Take into consideration a few things when you're shopping .

-How often do you end up saying "I need more space?" 

-How often do you use all of the burners on your current stove? Not just at once, but the different sizes? 

-Do you have the space in your kitchen for a larger stovetop that it would need if you got one with more burners? 

-Would getting a second smaller stovetop in addition to your current one benefit you, rather than getting one large one? 


All of these are ways to look at what type of stovetop you might consider getting next as the number of burners you have will directly impact the size and placement of your new stove.   We will say that getting a stove that has five burners in electric is very difficult but getting one that is 6 burners and electric is possible. 


Automatic reignite

A useful feature that you might want to look into is automatic re-ignition if you're looking to get a gas stove. Occasionally with a gas stove the flame might go out on a burner, or on multiple burners without you noticing. This can throw off cooking times and temperatures if too much time passes. With this feature that's not a concern as the stove will automatically re-ignite after it senses that a burner has gone out. 


Continuous grates

If you want to make your gas stovetop more professional looking, you might consider getting continuous grates for your stove. Instead of having a single grate over one burner, you combine two f them together into one long, smooth line. Yes, they're heavier, but the make the stove look more appealing and 'finished' according to many homeowners. 


Stove top griddles

On the other hand, if you're looking at your stove and wondering why you need pots and pans, a griddle might be more your thing. These can be added to either a gas stove or an electric, but as of yet it's not happening on an induction. These heat more smoothly and evenly than a griddle that you just lay on top of preexisting burners. Great for making every meal of the day without needing to use mutliple dishes. Eggs, bacon and sausage? Check. Grilled cheese sandwich? Check. Sausage with peppers and mushrooms? Check.  There's a huge amount of  food that you can make on a griddle. 

Ventilation

We mentioned earlier that you need a ventilation system with a gas stove, and many people choose to have them with electric and induction stoves too, just in case you burn something. One option is a downdraft cooktop. This option, instead of having a fan or range hood, has a small vent built into the cooktop. It's built into the back of the cooktop or in between the burners to suck steam and smoke away. This also gives you back the space over your stovetop to be used for lighting or additional storage.

Or, if you prefer going with a traditional range hood, that's also an option. You can choose what it looks like and whether it's a centerpiece of the kitchen, or if it blends into the walls.  

Regardless of which one you choose,  the important point, even if you have an induction stovetop, is to have a way to pull the steam and smoke safely out of your kitchen so that you can breathe and see easily while you're in the kitchen. 

Features


Speed heat

Some recent stoves have started to make it so that you can very quickly bring a pot of water to boil. While water is what they typically show, ‘speed heat’ can be applied to anything. It will be one of your burners for those times when you need to make things go that little bit faster. 


Safety

Who hasn’t accidentally burned themselves on a burner because you weren’t looking closely enough? Two safety features that we love for stoves are auto-shutoff and a heat indicator. The auto-shutoff makes it so that you can set a timer for what you’re cooking. After that point, the burner will shut off and you don't have to risk your food burning if you have to step away or forget to turn it off. The heat indicator is just that. It might be at the front right next to the burner knobs, or it might be on the control panel at the back. Either way it will be a light of some sort to show you that the burner is still hot. 


Wi-Fi

There are stoves now that come with wi-fi and app connectivity to make it so that you can keep an eye on your stove from anywhere. 


Controls

When it comes to controlling your stove, as of right now at least, you’ve got two options on most stoves. You can have knobs to turn on an individual burner. Or you can have digital controls that activate just when you touch the panel. These are great if you’re struggling to handle knobs due to arthritis or something similar.

Freezer Deep Dive

How does your freezer work, what makes one better than another, and do you need a new one? 

 Standalone Freezer Types

Imagine having to walk down into your root cellar in order to find that your food has gone rotten because you left it down there too long. Or that a mouse got to it. Prior to the invention of freezers, root cellars were one of the key ways we used to store and preserve our food. This week we're diving deep on freezers and which models serve best for your purposes. 

Before we dive in, we do have one note. Don't forget that alongside most, although not all, refrigerators there are also freezers. These will be either as a separate compartment at the top or bottom. Or you might get them as a 'side by side' where one side of the unit is a refrigerator and the other is a freezer. These are also fantastic options and if you're only freezing a small amount of food can be perfect for a household of 4 or fewer. If you're wanting to do meal prep, or you have a larger family you need to feed, an additional freezer can make your life much easier. 

Unlike our Deep Dives in the past we're sad to see that there aren't many features for freezers in standalone models. You might get digital temperature controls, or the ability to adjust the controls via Wi-Fi, but there's not much. The biggest things you need to keep an eye out for are insulation, power source, and the compressor. These three things are really going to affect how good your freezer is and whether it's worth the money you're going to spend on it. 

Portable Freezer

A portable freezer is ideal if you're going to a party or the lake. After all you don't want to bother with coolers full of ice that are going to melt eventually. Portable freezers are very spartan in terms of what features they offer but they are also cheap because of that. They can be AC or DC-powered. Some models are even able to plug into your car. These are, in short, great for people who travel frequently, but we wouldn't advise them for home use.  These also aren't going to be very large. You should expect to be able to store a couple of liters of soda and some additional food. The largest that we found was 85L  (think 120 cans of 12oz) while the smallest we found was 10.5L or about 4 bottles of soda. 

Chest Freezer 

Picture a box. It might be as 'small' as 2.1 cubic feet or absolutely massive at 40 cubic feet. Give your box a hinged lid, and inside the box picture, it with subdividers you can move around This is (essentially) the description of a chest freezer. If you need to store large types of food like whole birds or sides of beef or pork, this is a good choice. Oddly shaped pieces of food, or large quantities of food, these are what chest freezers are great at handling. A chest freezer is usually very affordable when compared to other types of freezers. 

Two important things to note. 

-A chest freezer typically won't have an internal fan. This means that the coldest air is going to settle at the bottom and warmer air will rise to the top. Make sure that if you are storing other types of food in it that only what you plan to use soon is near the top.

-The chest's lid isn't meant to have things stacked on top of it. They can't handle heavy objects. Doing so anyway can cause the lid to bow, breaking the seal on the freezer. This would mean that the air from inside the freezer would escape more easily and things at the top can defrost. Note that in our tiny house appliance article, we noted that they could be used for a table in-between times when you need to access them. This is still a viable possibility. The reason that works is that you set a flat surface on top of the chest and then items on the whole of that, it spreads the weight more evenly. Doing it this way prevents the weight from bowing any one spot of the freezer lid. If on the other hand you just sit on the lid, all of the weight is focused in one spot, and that spot will dent and malform, thus breaking the seal. 

Upright Freezer

Upright freezers are great for those of us who are... on the shorter side. With a chest freezer, you can tip yourself over the side trying to reach the bottom. (Yes your blogger has done it.) An upright freezer though has internal shelves for separating things out and it opens like a fridge! Upright freezers come in a wide variety of sizes. You might need one that fits under your counters and is the size of a mini fridge just for keeping meal prep kits in. Alternatively, you might be storing an entire year's harvest in yours and you're going to need one the size of a standard refrigerator. Both options are available, although naturally, prices will vary between them. They're usually going to offer fans and auto defrost features but they're also going to cost more than a chest freezer. 

Drawer Freezer

A drawer freezer is kind of like a drawer dishwasher in that it is capable of fitting under your cabinets and containing multiple drawers for easier access. These are ideal for a home with a very busy kitchen. Drawer freezers are meant to fit right alongside your existing cabinets. You can even use the top as additional counter space if you wanted. They will usually have fans to circulate air evenly and an auto-defrost function. They also include slots for putting in separators to subdivide the space however you want. They are priced higher than most other options, but well worth it in our opinion if you're looking to get additional freezer space.  One great thing to note is that many drawer freezers are available as 'panel ready' meaning that you can purchase panels to fit over the front. Then they can blend seamlessly into your kitchen, allowing you to keep the look of your kitchen uninterrupted. 




Throughout this post, we've mentioned that some models will have auto defrost options and some don't. Why though is it important? Good question. Over time a freezer can build up ice on different layers of the freezer. Not just on your food, but on the walls of the unit as well. If moist air is able to get into the freezer at all it will coat the edges and freeze into lovely ice crystals. Over time this can build up until it coats the freezer. It can even get to the point that you won't be able to use sections of the freezer without having to hack out the ice that's there. (Ask the blogger how she knows.....) Now, you can defrost your freezer without having an auto-defrost function. To do that you'd remove everything from the freezer, unplug it and take it outside. You can then let it sit in the sun all day, you can use a hairdryer or you can take a chisel and mallet to the ice and carefully start working out the ice.  If you want to avoid having to go through all of this, a defroster can be very useful. They also help with preventing freezer burn, but that's as much about how the food is sealed as how well the freezer seals. Defrosters will add cost and complexity to the freezer though, which means that you're not only going to be paying more but if something breaks it's another part that has to be explored. (Although we will say that regular maintenance checks can prevent from you having to deal with that.)

For many of us, having the option between a dishwasher and hand washing all of our dishes is a no-brainer. We’ll take the dishwasher any day. So, what happens if your current dishwasher breaks? As in we’ve come to your home, done everything we could and told you that the price to repair it would be more than replacing  it. Well, at that point, you might as well let your inner shopper out and go trawling websites to find that new dishwasher you were considering. This week we’re looking at what varieties dishwashers come in and what features you might see. Let’s dive in. 




Types of Dishwasher




Built-in Dishwasher

 A built-in dishwasher is the most common type of dishwasher in the modern American household. These are the ones that go under your bench or counters. These are built into your wall, piping, drainage, and all. Naturally, this means that they don’t move easily, if at all. (Apologies to those of you that love to rearrange your homes on a regular basis.) Two upsides to that fixed position though: 

-The noises are muffled by the surrounding cabinets and their contents. 

- Since they’re in the kitchen, they’re central to the cooking and dining process, making for easy access and clean-up. 




Portable Dishwashers

Portable dishwashers are a great option if you’ve got a more empty or pared-down kitchen. They’re freestanding devices that you can move around anywhere you need. They can provide extra countertop space when you need it, such as if you’re doing a lot of food prep. They work anywhere, and you can connect them to water and drainage. These are ideal for a couple or if you’re living on your own, as they are better at handling small loads. 




Drawer Dishwashers

Although we mentioned them in our tiny home post, we have yet to touch on these in-depth. Drawer dishwashers are relatively new to the appliance scene compared to built-ins. Instead of opening down and out, they pull out like a sliding drawer. They are very easy to use for those with difficulty bending as they load from the top.

They’re ideal for smaller loads, although they do come in single or double drawer formats. No matter which size you choose, they are still not as spacious as your standard built-in of today. 

One major downside is that because they are such a new concept, makers are still in the process of working the kinks out. Drawer dishwashers are harder to clean, more expensive, and are more prone to breakage than traditional washers. 




Countertop Dishwashers

The supremely shiny countertop dishwashers are a very new concept. They come in several different sizes, but are still smaller than a drawer dishwasher. They don’t need to be builtin and can be moved around very easily. They don’t even need dedicated water o drainage and can instead be hooked up to your sink. 

They use very little water and so are ideal for places with ongoing water shortages. Due to their size, they may not be able to handle all of your pots and pans and probably not the majority of calderas or woks. 



Integrated Washers

Our last category of washer types is not based on size or shape, but on how wel it disappears. These are designed to fit in with a very uniform kitchen look. An integrated dishwasher might come with or be ready for panels that match the cabinets in your kitchen. They are built into the cabinetry, much like the built-ins are, but they are split into two categories. Either a ‘fully integrated’ dishwasher or a ‘semi integrated’ dishwasher. A fully integrated unit won’t be any different from a normal cabinet in appearance and instead will have all of your controls on the inside of the machine. A semi-integrated dishwasher on the other hand will have the control panel on the outside but it will still have the cabinetry panel as well. 




Dishwasher Sizes




Now that we’ve looked at the different types of dishwashers let’s quickly look at some of the most common size-related terms you’re likely to encounter. 




These are going to be applied to your built-in dishwashers, although not always. For that reason, we advise carefully checking descriptions before you purchase. 




Full Size

These are the most common variety of dishwasher. They’re designed to hold between 12 and 16 place settings at once. The idea is to cut down on how often you’re running the dishwasher by doing the largest load possible at once. These will usually measure in at 24” wide, 24” deep, and 35” high.

Slimline 

Take the full-size dishwasher and shave off 6” or so. That’s a slimline. Measuring in typically at 18” wide, 24” deep and 35” high, they are great for a galley kitchen. 



Compact
A compact dishwasher is very small and will be roughly the size of your microwave in terms of counter space.  The smallest we found was the Faberware Portable dishwasher at 17'' wide,  16.5'' deep, and  17” high. 



Features



Sound Reduction

We’re starting off with this one because dishwashers can be noisy. If your bedroom is right across from the kitchen, you know what we mean.  This is built into the design of the dishwasher and dramatically cuts down on the amount of noise heard throughout the house. 



Sensor Wash 

This will run a scan over your dishes before the wash begins to assess how dirty they are and adjust the cycle accordingly. This not only saves energy and water, but it also saves on your bills. 



Steam Prewash 

A  steam prewash will heat water and fill the dishwasher with steam before the actual cycle starts so as to loosen up food debris, grease, and other detritus. 



Flexible Racks 

A flexible rack system lets you move the racks in your dishwasher around, simple, right? Sometimes you need more space on top, and sometimes you need more space on the bottom row. A great example is after doing a lot of cooking, and you don’t want to hand wash all of your large pots and pans. Now you can move your racks around to accommodate them. 




Stainless Steel Interior

A stainless steel interior is great because it’s more energy efficient and better sanitizing. They can run hotter temperatures because the steel can handle the heat. The downsides, though, are twofold. 

They’re more expensive. 

They will show hard water stains and calcium build-up.



Plastic Interior 

A plastic interior is the most common and more cost-effective interior option when purchasing a dishwasher. They’re easier to clean, and they last a long time. They have their downsides, too, though. 

They can’t run as hot as a dishwasher with a stainless steel interior because the plastic would begin to melt at those temperatures. 

They are noisier as plastic isn’t an excellent insulator of sound.

There are so many different options for dryers. No doubt that list up top probably looks huge (it does to us too) but we're going to tackle all of it. We'll be starting off by looking at the power sources that are currently available for your dryer, whether you're looking for a new one or want to understand where your current one may not be the right fit. 




Electric 

An electric dryer is the one that most people have in their homes, and for many excellent reasons. They don't require you to pay for a specialist to set up a natural gas or propane hookup. They're cheaper and more easily available for consumers to get hold of, which means that if something breaks on them, they're also easier to get parts for. The downside is that they do use much more electricity in order to run. Even the most energy-efficient ones will still push up your electric bill a fair bit. 



Gas

By contrast, a gas dryer is more expensive to install, though only if you don't already have an existing natural gas or propane hookup in your home. Whereas an electric dryer utilizes metal coils to heat the air, a gas dryer just uses natural gas or propane. (Just to be clear, the gas doesn't come into contact with your clothing.) The dryer itself is also more expensive than an electric dryer, but that it's due to two different factors. The first is that they are not as common as the electric dryers, so as the consumer, you absorb more of the costs. The second is that a gas dryer is going to last much longer than an electric.  They do require a vent to the outside, which can either be done with a permanent vent, for which most manufacturers will offer a kit or a temporary hookup. We'll talk more about that in just a moment. A gas dryer isn't great if you only have a small space for your dryer, but, the trade-off is that they are extremely energy efficient. 




Vented Dryer

Your standard vented dryer can either be gas or electric, and they are the single most common variety of dryers on the market. They work by heating air and sending it into the drum. That air is then vented back out of the system and replaced with fresh air once it becomes too saturated with moisture. As we mentioned up above, the vent can either be a permanent hookup or temporary.  A temporary one might be connected to a block that you put in your window with the frame closed around it, and then you remove it when you're done. These dryers are not perfect at removing all of the air from the system though and so your laundry room can become very muggy when using them. They are cheaper to buy than some of the more complicated models, but they are also more expensive to operate. Additionally, these are also typically of a larger capacity than most other models, meaning you can dry more clothes at once. 



Condenser Dryer 

When we talked about the electric dryers we talked about how they use a heating element to heat the air. A condenser dryer is different. They pull in air from all sides of the unit and pass it through a condenser where the air is heated up and then passed into the drum. This process leads to a lower temperature than comes with using a vented dryer. The upside to this is that they are gentler on your clothes. The downside is that they do require a longer drying time and more electricity because of that.  When a condenser dryer pulls the air out of the drum, it is forced into a condenser chamber where the water is extracted from it, the dry air is heated, and it goes back around.  One of the major benefits of a condenser dryer is that it doesn't require a vent to go outside since the air is at a lower temperature and all of the moisture is extracted from it. 



Heat Pump Condenser Dryer 

A heat pump condenser dryer is one of the newest varieties to hit the market. Have you ever felt the outside of your refrigerator and been baffled at how hot it is on the outside and cool on the inside? This dryer takes advantage of a similar principle. Instead of a heating coil, it uses a miniaturized refrigerant system, which we know sounds contradictory. The way it works is that the system starts by compressing a refrigerant, which then expels heat, which heats the air. That air goes into the dryer, drying your clothes and picking up moisture. That moisture-rich air is taken out of the system, it goes through the refrigerant where the water is collected and is then reheated to be used again. This cycle repeats over and over, but it's at a lower temperature than the vented dryer. This may sound like a bad thing, but the heat pump dryers are surprisingly energy efficient. The only issue is that they do take more time to run,  and because they do have more parts, there is the potential for more to go wrong. 



Now that we've broken down the key types of dryers, let's take a look at the different features you should expect if you're on the market. 

Door types. Wow, such an exciting topic, right? Well, not really. That being said, it is important to think about. Depending on how your laundry room is set up, it's going to affect where you need to put your dryer. 

Hamper Door

These are great if you've got a small space. Instead of going left or right, they swing out and down, like a laundry chute in a hotel. This makes it really easy to drop laundry in or pull it out. It also means that if you lose your grip on something, it'll slide right back into the dryer instead of dropping to the floor. Best of all, they won't swing shut when in use! 






Side Open Door

These are probably the type we're most familiar with. They're on the front of the dryer and they swing to one side or the other.  With these, you'll need to take into account the space you need, so that when you open the door, you aren't smacking yourself, the walls, or the washer. You also want to make sure that the door can open as far as possible so that it isn't a hassle trying to reach in and get your laundry.

Quick story. Your beloved writer was very foolish as a teenager. When she first heard about this concept, she thought that it meant the door could swing two different ways. Either up and down or side to side. No, it doesn't work that way sadly. What it does mean is that with this type of door you can take the door off and install it so that it swings open to the left or right, based on what you need in your home. 






Top Open Door

And finally, we have the type of door that is actually on the top of your dryer. (Would it then be a lid rather than a door? We aren't sure. We don't make up the terms.)  These are great if you don't want to worry about which way the door swings and how much clearance you have around it. BUT an important thing is that, if you're shorter, you might have trouble getting your clothes out from the bottom. This is why many have transitioned to the side open door. 




Moving on from doors to drums. We’re not talking about the noisy variety here, we mean the one that spins your clothes around inside the dryer. (Although if your dryer is noisy, we should be able to help with that.) 

Stainless Steel 

The best of the best when it comes to the type of drum inside your dryer. A stainless steel drum is longer lasting and is very hard to damage. They don't rust or chip, which means that they have a very long lifespan in comparison to other varieties. The downside is that it does tend to be more expensive than other varieties of drums. 

Coated

Coated drums can either be powder-coated steel (not stainless steel) or porcelain coated. These are the middle-of-the-road option. As such you're going to be paying less for them. The downside is that they are also going to have a shorter lifespan. The coating can be chipped over time, or if you put something heavy in them. Multiple things can then happen after chips are formed in the coating. That chipping exposes the underlying steel which can rust when exposed to wet clothes and linens on a regular basis, and that rust can then stain your clothes. The chipped areas can also catch on any clothing you put in from then on, causing snags or tears over time. 

Plastic

Finally, we have the least expensive variety of drums for your dryer: The plastic drum. Now the upshot to these is that they are much lighter and are significantly cheaper to produce, which brings down the price of your dryer. However, they can't handle "hard" objects according to manufacturers, and they are much more likely to chip or wear out than a stainless steel drum or even the coated drums. 

Time-Based Features

Delay

Delay is a self-explanatory feature, but one we love nonetheless. It allows you to delay the start of the dryer for a period of time. Some models will let you delay it for several hours. 

Time Left In Cycle

Just what it says on the tin, this is a visual display to show you how long is left on the cycle. It might be a ticking timer that rotates, it might be lights that count up or down, or it might be a digital display telling you what stage the dryer is in currently. 

Timed Dry

Time dry lets you set the dryer for a specific amount of time. This can be useful for all sorts of reasons, from needing to just freshen up a shirt to needing to finish drying it after you selected the wrong settings by accident (or learning curve.) 

Features To Make Your Life Easier

Damp Alert

While most of us would think this is meant to tell you "hey the load is almost done" that's not actually the case. Instead, this is for when you need (or want) to iron your clothing. When this alarm goes off it means that your clothes are at the perfect stage in between dry and wet to best take to ironing and staying without wrinkles. 

Sensor Dry

Some dryers now have sensors in the drum itself. These are there to tell when the clothes are fully dry and to cut off the process, saving you time, energy and money. They also save your clothes from extra wear from being tumbled around more than what they need to. 

Attachable Dryer Rack

An additional item that some dryers come with is a wire rack that you can attach to stand in the middle of the drum. This doesn't move even as the drum does. This would be something you could use for drying hats, shoes, special fabrics (such as lingerie), or even stuffed animals. Anything delicate that you want dried, but don't want tossed around by the dryer.  

Steam

This one sounds counterproductive, we know. "But blogger," we hear you cry "why do I want to get my clothes wet if I'm trying to dry them?" That our friends is the trick. First off, the steam isn't present during the entire cycle. It's only added to the drum during specific parts of it. The steaming process has several benefits that are especially beneficial given our concern with all things germs. Steam makes your clothes even hotter, meaning that germs and bad odors are significantly reduced. They also reduce wrinkles when the clothes are fully dried. 

Child Lock

Did you ever mess with the buttons on a dryer as a kid because you were bored? Or because you wanted to know what it did, or maybe just because it was a button? With this feature, your kids can't do the same to you. You can set the settings you need for a load and walk away knowing your kids can turn as many dials as they want and it won't turn your laundry into a pile of ash. 

Wrinkle Guard

This last feature is one we simultaneously love and hate. On one hand, this keeps the dryer running until you're able to finish what you're doing. It keeps the clothes tumbling at a lower temperature so that they don't settle and develop wrinkles. On the other hand, many dryers will have a very loud, annoying buzz to alert you that the cycle is done. That sound then gets played every so often until you come and collect the clothes. 

How to Choose Your Next Dryer

So, at the end of the day, if you're looking to replace your dryer, or just starting to consider what you'll want a few years from now after your current one is in a state beyond repair, how do you do it? 

Power

Start by looking at the power source your current dryer has. Does your home already have a gas hookup? Or is your current dryer electric? Do you want to make a change? 

Size of the Dryer

 How large is your laundry room? Your dryer needs to be able to fit comfortably within the space, have breathing room and be able to open easily? Careful measurements need to be accounted for before you purchase a new dryer. 

Capacity of the Dryer

How much laundry do you do on a weekly basis? Your dryer needs to be able to handle that not only in terms of as a whole but also in comparison to your washer, which brings us to an important rule of thumb. Ideally, your dryer should be twice the capacity of your washing machine. The reason for this is that while your clothes will compress and stick together once they're wet, they need space to dry. As the dryer tumbles the clothes they need space to expand and move more freely to allow the air to circulate.

What Do All Of Those Features Actually DO?







Last week we walked you through the basics of different types of washing machines. This week we're tackling the most common features. What do they mean, what they do, and are they worth it? We'll give you our opinions below, lets get started.

Compact

If after last week you decided that an all-in-one washer dryer combo isn't for you, this washing might be. It's still just as capable as a standard washer, has all the bells and whistles, it's just compact. If you're looking to build a tiny house in your yard or as a getaway cottage, this would be perfect. 

Our opinion: 8/10 - Definitely a good choice if you need space. The only downside is it being smaller than a standard machine. 


Stackable

If you're looking for saving space, this is a feature you definitely want. The machines are built so that they can handle the weight of a dryer stacking on top of them, or stabilized so that they can stand on top of a dryer.   As long as both machines are well seated, you're good to go. 

Our opinion: 7/10 - If you've got a room with a high ceiling, this is for you. You save on the floor space and don't lose out on functionality. Our only concern is the difficulty of making sure they're seated properly. 


Portable

A portable washing machine is small enough that you can use them almost anywhere. Whether you live in a dorm, an apartment without a laundry center, or an RV as you travel, this is an ideal machine. It's a little different from the compact machine because you can use them anywhere, whereas the compact stays where you put it. While it can only handle a few items at a time, it counterbalances that by having a 'dehydration basket' for drying your clothes instead of needing a  separate dryer. 

Our Opinion: 7/10



Pedestal Storage

If on the other hand you have enough space for a full washer and dryer but you need more space for laundry extras, a pedestal storage unit might be for you. You can make up for having a smaller laundry room or closet by storing your detergents and other cleaners under the washer. The only downside that we have is that you need to be slightly taller in order to still easily reach the control panel. 

Our Opinion: 9/10 


Door Window

Just what it says on the tin, your door, either top or front loading, has a window. Although we think it's so you can keep cats and small children mesmerized, engineers say no. They say i'ts so you can keep an eye on your laundry as it runs. 

Our Opinion: 5/10 it's useful, but it's not necessary unless you really need to keep your kids preoccupied. 


Adjustable Legs

We've talked before about how a rocking washing machine can be caused by your floor being uneven. Most of us try to fix it with bits of wood or cardboard. Some fantastic engineer figured out that adjustable legs would be more useful. Now you can easily level your washing machine with this feature. 

Our Opinion: 10/10  We think this one is absolutely needed for anyone, no matter what other features you get. 


Cycle Status

Have you ever checked on your washer, noticed it said it had 30 minutes left, and walked away? Except you come back later, and it says it’s still got another 10 minutes. 

A cycle status instead shows you where in the process your machine is, so you can plan around that. Is it in the rinse cycle or spin? Take that into account, and it's so much less frustrating than a pseudo-timer. 

Our Opinion: 20/10   (Nope, that's not a typo, we just really believe it's needed.) 


Washer/Dryer Set

These are washer and dryer units that are matched aesthetically. If you want a magazine perfect laundry room, this might be what you're looking for. They'll have their own additional features, but the machines will be perfectly matched. 


Delay Start

There's nothing worse than having to weigh staying up late to do laundry vs not having enough water pressure for your morning shower. A washing machine with delay start solves that. You can set your machine to wash before you wake up, toss them into the dryer and have warm, wrinkle free clothes when you're out of the shower! In winter at least, that's perfect.  In summer, well, at least you know you're going to be looking fantastic and wrinkle free. 

Our Opinion:  8/10 Definitely something we want, but it's not something we absolutely have to have. It's close though. 

Pause Button

Picture this, you've sorted your laundry and loaded the machine and you're getting on with something else. You notice you dropped a shirt while carrying the load. It used to be that you would have to wait and do an entirely new load of laundry. With a pause button, you can pause the wash where it is, toss in the shirt and continue with your day. 

Our Opinion:  10/10 Definitely a needed feature. 

Adaptive Fill

Some of us have trouble telling whether a load of laundry is 'small' or 'medium, 'large' vs. 'extra-large.' Adaptive fill was built for people like us. The machine senses how full it is and puts in the amount of water needed. This means you're only using the amount of water you needed, and your water bill will thank you for it. 

Our Opinion:  6/10 It's really useful and definitely fantastic, BUT we won't say this one is a necessity. 


Steam

Have you ever taken your clothes out of the dryer and found they were still wrinkled? It happens because of how the agitator works, throwing clothes against the fins and the side of the machine. Normally, you put it onto a hanger and hang that in your bathroom while you (or one of your family members) take a shower. By the time you're done with your shower, your clothes are perfect. A steam feature gets rid of the need for that. The steam allows the water to soak your laundry more thoroughly, saturating it, rather than risking sections being covered by other clothes. The steam feature can also be used after washing to soften, sterilize or de-wrinkle your clothes. It also means that you're cutting down on ironing. The downside here is that you are using more energy to heat the water, which is going to push up your electric bill. 

Our Opinion: 7/10 While it's more expensive to purchase and run a machine like this, if you need your clothes looking sharp all the time, this is a fantastic feature to keep an eye out for. 



WIFi Enabled

It's not the washing machine of the future, but it's close. Earlier, we talked about delayed starts. This is better. With a wifi-enabled washer you can check on your laundry from anywhere. You can start or stop it, and you can see how much longer it has left. YOu can even see what stage its at in the wash cycle. It can't transfer laundry over to the dryer, but that's only a matter of time. 

Our Opinion: 8/10 We're still sketchy about how manufacturers use and protect your information, but we think it's fantastically useful aside from that.


Soft Close Lid

If you've ever caught your fingers in a washer lid, this feature is for you. Engineers made it so that the lid 'catches' itself in the fall and closes slowly. No more smashed fingers or loud, sudden bangs! 

Our Opinion: 10/10 Smashed fingers are always to be avoided. We think all washers should have these.

High Efficiency

Rounding out our list of features, there's a high-efficiency washing machine.  Much like with Energy Star ratings (see the additional reading below) an HE machine has standards. In order for a manufacturer to be able to apply that term to their washer, the machine has to meet guidelines for detergent, water and energy consumption. They have to use less of all three of those than what a standard machine does, or else they can't make use of the label.  On top of being better for your pocket, an HE machine can handle a larger load and removes more water during the spin cycle, meaning less time in the dryer. All around, we think a high-efficiency machine is dead useful. 

Our Opinion: 9/10 We want to say that everyone should get one of these machines, but we know that's not always possible. If you can get one, though, they definitely have our vote.
