Easy Ways To Hide Your Appliances

Do you ever get tired of your appliances or appliances in general? What about other necessary fixtures around your house? The way they look, or the fact that they never seem to change? We know we do, and we know that some of our clients do as well. This week we’re taking a look at different ways you can change the look of your appliances and how they fit into your kitchen.

There are three different ways so far that we’ve found to change your appliances.

Exchange It

The first method is the most straight forward. You can get rid of the appliances you have and exchange them for alternate models that will fit with what you already have. This might involve buying specially built appliances. However, you won’t have to worry about messing up the decor you’ve spent time building your dream kitchen. So while not the most cost-effective, this one can be the easiest.

  • Some companies offer refrigerated drawers rather than a full fridge, which is what is going on here. It looks fantastic, and you can keep everything close to hand. We think it would work best if you have a larger kitchen, though, or perhaps a hanging rack for your pots and pans?

  • This one is definitely custom. Not only are you working with what you already have around you, but you’re building a shelf that will pop out only when you need it. It can also still be used for storing baked goods.

  • What are the panels under your sink for? Can anyone honestly think of a reason, other than decoration? These tiny drawers solve that issue by giving you somewhere to store your sponges that are easy to clean and hide away when you’re done.

  • We cannot tell you the number of times we’ve smacked our elbows on the knife block, or a hand or a plate. You get the picture. By creating a small sliding drawer at the end of your countertop, you add more storage space to your counter, and you don’t have to worry about smacking the knife block.

Work Around It

The second method is to have custom cabinetry (or something similar) that is built around the appliance. Depending on how handy you are with tools, you can either do this yourself or have someone else build them for you. These aim to blend the appliance into what you already have, making it, so they don’t stand out. Again, cost is a factor, though, because you’re working to build around or with what you have.

  • Do routers count as appliances? We’re not sure given how everything is connected to the internet these days, but we can all agree that they are undoubtedly ugly. Why should you have to look at them then? Cover them up by making them look like something else, like this row of books, for example.

  • Bamboo screens are one option; you can also use other types of screens, such as fully wooden ones or fabric ones to hide things, such as washers, dryers, radiators, etc.

  • This company will create a drop-down section within your counter where the appliances hide until they’re needed. Definitely a custom piece.

  • Built-in refrigerator that perfectly matches the surrounding cabinetry. If you look closely, you can see how it’s been affixed to the refrigerator doors without having to alter the fridge itself in any fashion.

  • This one is a little bit of using what you already have and a bit of custom cabinetry to leave your kitchen clutter-free when you aren’t using them.

  • This refrigerator has been cleverly disguised to look like an icebox. This one definitely can be done, but it’s going to take a bit of ingenuity to make it work.

  • All three of these are the same basic concept. Taking a cabinet you already have and adding something to it so that it serves the purpose of keeping your appliances out of the way, while still easily accessible. Each one is slightly different, but that goes to show how versatile this idea can be.

  • Adorable tiny custom box for your mixer? Check.

  • Can we all agree that breaker boxes are atrocious? What are you supposed to do if it’s inside your home in a critical room, though? Or if you’re looking to refurbish your garage into a new room?  Build a custom box around it and make it not stand out.

  • Continuing on with creating custom cabinets, why not hide your cat’s litter box? Give them somewhere quiet to go to the bathroom, as well as keeping you from having to smell it all the time.

  • Other than the stove, do you see any appliances in this shot? This is all custom cabinetry built around the fridge, dishwasher, and any others that the owner has. Even the oven appears to have been covered over.

Cover It

The third method is for those of us who aren’t /quite/ in love with our kitchen or need a change of pace. Maybe you’re like me, and committing to just one way of looking isn’t your thing? Or you want to test out a change before you make it more permanent? Try some of these alterations and see how they work for you!

  • While this one isn’t exactly changing the outside appearance of what you have, it is hiding it away within what you already have, i.e., one of your cabinets. Having a trash can that stays out of the way? Provided it’s on heavy-duty rollers, yes, please.

  • This is the perfect way to update your home, whether you own it or rent. This particular version is moisture and steam resistant, too, which means it’s excellent for your kitchen or bathroom.

  • This one doesn’t just have to be done with doorknobs or faucets. You could also do this with the hardware for cabinets, or the handles on your appliances.

  • Granite paint kits are fantastic. However, they can also be easily damaged if you don’t seal them right or choose the wrong one. Make sure that you do your research beforehand so that your hard work will last for years to come.

  • This kitchen is an excellent example of creating a panel that sticks to the front of an appliance, in this case, the dishwasher, as well as reusing a space to make something new.

  • Both of these continue on the trend of creating a panel that covers the appliance to blend in, without needing a custom cabinet around it.

  • All of these are using different materials to go and give your appliances a makeover. Whether it’s electrical tape, paint or cling film, you can get all sorts of ideas by looking on the internet.

  • When it’s not in use, why have your tv just sitting there? Why not hide it and have a beautiful piece of artwork instead?

  • Cords are a fact of life with electronics. But who says they have to be ugly? You can use cord wraps like these, or get inventive and use painters tape to create your own designs.

  • Plain doors are the worst in this blogger’s opinion. They need depth! Fortunately, it’s surprisingly easy to do that with just a bit of paint and masking tape.

The Magic of Ice Cream

Greetings my appliance-minded friends. I hope the summer has treated you well. Here in Ohio we are approaching what some call Fall. In Ohio, however, we call it Second Summer. We’ll have a few weeks of actual Fall here in October and then around November, we’ll slip into Practice Winter before actual Winter comes in and sets up camp until about April.

Speaking of Second Summers, one thing that hits the spot is a Frosty. If you don’t happen to have a Wendy’s Restaurant near you, you might not know what a Frosty is.

It’s not quite soft serve ice cream, and it’s not quite a milkshake. It’s something in between. And it’s delicious. Simply delicious.

For me, it’s something else. It’s a connection to my grandfather. My Gramps is an amazing man. In his 90’s, he’s still going strong. Gramps has an apartment at the same independent living center that I worked at in high school (how’s that for synchronicity?).

You see, Gramps loves Frostys. Once a week, I’ll hit Wendy’s and pick up a couple of Jr. Frostys and go visit Gramps. I leave my cell phone in the car, there’s no need for it.

When I walk in, Gramps always has the TV on, but always with the sub-titles. On a good day, he still has his hearing aids in. When he doesn’t, I just have to be more deliberate with my words.

The best visits, though, are the ones where I barely talk at all. These are the visits that Gramps tells me stories. I learn about his visits all over the world. I learn about relatives I’ll never meet. I learn about things that become more real in that little apartment than they ever could anywhere else. I could probably watch a video on YouTube about riding an elephant to the top of a mountain in Nepal. About how, from the top of the mountain, their tour bus looked no bigger than an ant.

It’s a reminder that sometimes you don’t need to hit the interwebs for those wonderful and amazing stories. Sometimes all you need to do is find one of your relatives-a parent, a grand-parent, aunt or uncle, and talk to them. Or better yet, grab a treat, go visit them and just listen.

Top 4 Rides at Disneyland California Park - Not everything has to be about appliances!

When you think of your favorite place to go, where would that be? Is it on a tropical island with a pina colada in hand? Is it in a forest cabin surrounded by nature? For me, it is a place surrounded by magic, roller coasters, and Dole Whips. Okay, well my favorite are the chimichangas, but that is another story in it’s own! If you had not guessed by now, I am talking about Disneyland, the happiest place on Earth. This place is so much more than an amusement park, but a place I could leave any worries behind and purely enjoy myself. I am 24 years old, but tell me that were going to Disneyland and I am literally like a 5 year old in a candy shop. No joke either. Let’s take a look at some of the top rides of all time in this magical land!

1) Space Mountain

Every single time I go to Disneyland, this ride is ALWAYS either jam packed with a million people in line, or broken down (sadly). However, I believe this definitely is one of the top rides for those who love a fast roller coaster. For those who have never been, when entering the ride, it takes you through the entryway of a spacecraft (pretty much) and you take a seat in your spacecraft. Once the ride starts, you begin going up a long hill of lights to get ready for take off! This ride is so much fun because you go so fast the whole time, and the entire ride is IN THE DARK. The only lights you see are the stars that surround you! But don’t forget to smile at the end of the ride for the picture taken. That’s my number one mistake!

DISNEY FACT #1: All the plants in Tomorrowland are edible. But that doesn;t mean you can eat them!!

2) Indiana Jones Adventure

Okay so this ride can seem super intimidating to someone who has never been on the ride before. Again, this ride has one of the longest lines I have ever stood in before, but it is well worth the wait. Entering the ride, you go through a series of roped off lanes, until you hit a cave that takes you to the main attraction. Once it's your turn, you hop inside your Jeep and take off! It’s always fun to let the youngest child take the hot seat as the “driver” (I know this because people always let me be the driver!) The ride is jerky, and bumpy just like a true ride through the jungle would be. You come across giant snakes, fire, snakes, and a HUGE surprise at the end that I won’t ruin for you, but if you insist on knowing I recommend googling it!

DISNEYLAND FACT #2 : Never wear anything on your head during this ride. I Learned this the hard way and lost my pair of Minnie Mouse ears!!

3) It’s A Small World

This has got to be one of the most iconic rides in all of Disneyland. Again, it has a large line no matter the time of day, but if you are in need of a quick break before heading to another roller coaster, then this is the ride for you. You sit down inside a boat, and it takes you on this magical journey throughout all sorts of different countries. The ride is filled with dancing and singing dolls, that sing the song ‘It's A Small World’. It may sound creepy, but trust me, it isn’t! Not to mention, there are characters from so many Disney movies that are put into doll-version on this ride, like Ariel & Lilo & Stitch!

DISNEYLAND FACT #3: Throughout the park, there are hidden Mickeys EVERYWHERE. There are books that show you where each one is!

Pirates of the Carribean.jpg

4) Pirates of the Caribbean

And lastly, one of my favorite rides of all is the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. The line never takes long to go through, and its one you get to relax in. If you have ever seen any of the movies, Captain Jack Sparrow appears throughout the whole ride! Your boat takes you through so many scenes of fighting, livelihood, and the true atmosphere of a pirate’s life. This is a number one ride in my books for sure! Not to mention, it is SO COLD inside the ride, which is perfect for those summer months!

DISNEYLAND FACT #4: On this ride, there are real actual skulls used throughout the ride! Creepy! But Cool!

So by now, I think you can see I am a wee bit obsessed with the Happiest Place on Earth. It is just somewhere I truly grew up being around, and have never once gone and not enjoyed myself! Even though the prices can get expensive, the ticket is always worth it!

Refrigerator Training

John is doing well in training with us here at Appliance Rescue Service.

John is starting on refrigerators today, as you can tell from the pictures he is determined, but limited to working only on the bottom drawer freezers for the time being. There is a height issue we are working on here, but we feel one day he will reach the top.

We will keep you posted, but the Appliance Rescue Service family is very impressed so far!
